Lizard Series

Painted on location at a neighborhood pet store: ink pen on 4 x 6 paper samples from Legion Paper in NY.

Every Saturday morning for 11 weeks I had an hour and half to kill while waiting for my son’s hip hop dance class to end. I found a pet store close to the dance school. The store had this amazing reptile room. I started drawing. It was a couple weeks before anyone even asked me what I was doing. Finally one curious employee asked, “Hey, everyone is wondering, who is the lady writing letters to the lizards?” Why did they think I was writing letters to the lizards? Is this something that happens occasionally? I thought it obvious that I was drawing. But they were small drawings. And I did hold my notebook close to my face.

Years have passed. My children are finally out of the house. I am working on my lizard portraits once more. Experimenting with pulling prints of the original drawings and painting into them with gouache, watercolor and latex paint from Restoration Hardware.
